A Danish couple are €18 million (kr.114 million) richer after securing a share of a €90 million Eurojackpot top prize. Leif and Aase Sommer claimed the sum after matching the numbers 7,14, 23, 27, 35 and Euro numbers 3 and 5 in the draw on Friday 6th January.

The pair, who purchased their winning ticket from the Ølsted branch of the SuperBrugsen supermarket chain, were one of five lucky players to claim the top prize as the jackpot hit its cap for the second time in the space of 13 draws. Leif, 75, and Aase, 68, described the feeling as “unreal” as they collected their oversized cheque from Eurojackpot officials.

Despite their newfound wealth, pensioner Leif remains adamant that he and Aase will remain grounded. The pair plan to render themselves debt free, which will include paying off the mortgage on their Ølsted home, before seeing that their loved ones are suitably cared for in life. Leif, in a gesture of goodwill, also intends to provide his ex-wife with a percentage of their winnings. The pair have two children together and parted on very amicable terms: “She was so nice to me when we were divorced, and demanded nothing of me,” Leif explained to Danish news source BT.

However, the generous couple do plan on treating themselves with some of their winnings, with Leif eying a new set of wheels in the form of a Hyundai, and not the Mercedes his son had been hoping he would plump for. Aase, on the other hand, has a slightly smaller purchase in mind, as she plans to celebrate by buying herself a small purse or bag. "I might also like to take on a little cruise,” she joshed.

Leif and Aase admit that the media attention they have received has been intense, but they have taken the experience in their stride. The presentation ceremony was attended by many of the couple’s close friends, with many gushing about how popular the pair were within the local community, and they backed up the pair’s claims that this unexpected windfall would not change them. As for Leif, the shock of the win still seems to be sinking in: "I gotta get used to that even if I spend a million, we still have kr. 113 million back to use.”

If you would like to follow in the footsteps of Leif and Aase, EuroJackpot tickets for tonight’s guaranteed €10 million draw are available to purchase online or from any authorised retailer in participating countries. Best of luck!
