Greece Set To Join Eurojackpot
For the first time since 2017, Eurojackpot is set to get a new participating country, with tickets to go on sale in Greece.
Greek national lottery operator OPAP was granted approval by the Greek Government to introduce the game back in November 2022, with a 10-year licence set to begin on the day of the first draw in the country.
Greece is not currently a member of any transnational lottery, and joining Eurojackpot will give players the chance to win prizes larger than any that have previously been seen in the country.
OPAP CEO Yan Karas is excited about the launch, saying: “This is an important development for the Greek gaming market. It offers very large jackpots. It will be an important addition to our game portfolio.”
The date of the first draw to feature Greece has now been set for 8th March. Tickets will go on sale two days earlier on 6th March.
Greece’s arrival as a Eurojackpot member could even have a positive effect for everyone else, as the increased player pool will likely lead to more tickets being sold for every draw. This in turn will help the jackpot to grow more quickly.
The jackpot starts at €10 million and rolls over every time it is not won, until it reaches a cap of €120 million. This has happened several times over the past couple of years, most recently in January when a woman from Norway won the maximum jackpot.
19th Participating Country
Greece will become the 19th participating country when Eurojackpot tickets do go on sale. When the game started in March 2012, there were only seven nations taking part.
The popularity of the game has spread across Europe over the past decade, but it has been six-and-a-half years since Poland’s arrival as the most recent country to join.
Eurojackpot launched in Poland in September 2017, and a player from Piotrków Trybunalski became the country’s first jackpot winner in May 2019 when they shared €90 million with a German ticket holder.
Every lottery fan in Greece will be hoping to become the nation’s first Eurojackpot winner when tickets are put up for sale. Euro-Jackpot.net will keep you updated with more news as it is announced, and in the meantime you can follow the latest results every Tuesday and Friday night.
